The Nine Muses of Greek Mythology.

The nine Muses in Greek mythology were the entertainers of the Gods who represented the Arts as a collection. There are nine Muses in total:

Clio — The Muse of History, usually pictured holding a scroll or surrounded by books.

Melpomene — The Muse of Tragedy most likely pictured holding a tragedic mask or another symbol of a tragedy such as a sword, wooden mallet, etc.

Calliope — The Muse of Epics, usually pictured holding a tablet sometimes said to be the foremost of the nine.

Euterpe — She is the Muse of Music mainly instrumental, most likely portrayed playing the flute.

Erato — She is the Muse of Lyrics and Erotica, most likely portrayed next to Eros (thought to be cupid) holding a golden arrow or sometimes a lyre.

Thalia — She is the Muse of comedy, most likely pictured holding a comedic mask and a shepherd's staff.

Terpsichore — Muse of Dance, pictured standing gracefully holding a lyre.

Urania — Muse of Astronomy, pictured usually with a celestial globe she is pointing to with a rod.

Polyhymnia — Muse of Hymns and Religous poetry, pictured usually holding her finger to her mouth in a long cloak.

The Muses were born of a relationship between Zeus, (the king of the Gods), and the Titaness Mnemosyne; where he slept with her nine consecutive nights and she had these nine daughters. The Muses like I said are the embodiment of the Arts, and they inspire the mortal artists to create new beautiful artworks. Calliope is said to be the inspiration for Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey.

Along with being an inspiration for artists, the Muses were also said to be a balance to their mother keeper of memory; helping people forget about their troubles. There were local cults dedicated to each of the nine Muses and the Muses as a whole. These cults were usually associated with fountains or springs. The muses became a huge part of the mortal and immortal worlds.
