Humility

is the gift you don’t want to unwrap.

Humility is an important character trait that we can acquire in a gentle way. Sometimes, people who grew up with punitive-minded authority figures — parents, teachers, school counselors — had their first encounters with humility through humiliation.

Pairing humiliation with humility is likely to make people fearful of taking risks. Humiliation is an experience that can have a lifelong impact on a person and thwart their attempts to aim for their highest potential.

When we speak about reaching one’s potential, it is not always an ego-driven mad dash to impress others with your brilliance and ability to capitalize on your talents and strengths and become a billionaire.

There is nothing inherently wrong in becoming a millionaire or billionaire through capitalization of your talents. Money is a neutral resource, which some use as a weapon and some use as a tool to enrich others’ lives and provide resources to poor communities.

Reaching one’s potential is an individual and societal accomplishment because each person is of maximum service in the world through using their greatest gifts and talents.

But for the individual who has experienced numerous humiliations it’s psychologically safer to be quiet, secretly confused, and working hard to appear knowledgeable.

When this person who feels shame for not knowing everything steps forward to become visible in the world, we must encourage and celebrate this action.

How do we learn to embrace humility?

Unpairing the two words can make humility more appealing and a trait we aspire to claim. Humility and humiliation do not have to be intertwined in your thinking.

Humility can be the simple act of asking a question, admitting you didn’t understand how to do some aspect of your job or college assignment.
