Stop Drinking Calories!

The subject line says pretty much everything that needs to be said on this topic, but I will elaborate a little bit for the sake of education.

Here’s a quick physiology lesson:

When you consume carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into simple sugar molecules and puts them in your blood stream. The measure of this is your blood glucose or blood sugar level.

Your body keeps very tight control on your blood glucose level. Too much or too little can be fatal and you don’t have much wiggle room. Your body is constantly monitoring and adjusting this level using various hormones.

The important hormone for this discussion is insulin. Insulin is responsible for bringing down your blood glucose level by latching onto the sugar molecules and depositing them in fat cells throughout your body.

You can then deduce from this that the more sugar you put in your blood, the more insulin you will produce, and finally the more you will store in fat cells.

How does all of this apply to your latte, soda, or beer?

Most caloric beverages derive the majority of their calories from sugar. These drinks usually have way more sugar than you’d expect. A typical soda (or Odwalla juice) has around 30 grams of sugar in it. That’s 30 of those little sugar packets at restaurants. That is a lot of sugar to consume in one beverage!

Aside from the quantity of sugar your body has to process, the speed at which it has to do it is astounding. The carbohydrates found in beverages require virtually no digestion. They are basically mainlined into your blood stream and must be dealt with immediately. This creates a huge insulin spike and a lot of fat storage.

Here’s another way to think about it. Every time you drink a caloric beverage, all of those calories instantly turn into fat in your body.

If you drink a lot of soda or other caloric beverages, you will be amazed at how fast you lose fat when you cut them out of your diet. Caloric beverages are a surprisingly huge calorie source and all of those calories are bad for you. Do yourself a favor and eliminate them from your diet.

What do you drink instead? Water, tea, coffee (without sweetener). That’s it. Of course you can have some wine or hard alcohol when you must. I know you won’t give that up anyway. But the vast majority of your fluid intake should be water.
