The Backpack is a simple & creative design that makes our everyday life easier. You could not go through a day of school & activities without it. Where would you put all that homework & textbooks? Where would you put all those messy art supplies? Or smelly soccer shoes? Well, you would put it in your nice & neat backpack. Made for you to go through out your day with your arms available, & able to do all sorts of fun things.

History

Up until 1930, people were using the bookstrap. The bookstrap was only a leather belt wrapped around books. Students in the 1900’s mostly used the bookstrap to carry their textbooks around school. Eventually it went out of style & students would carry around their school supplies by hand. Can you imagine that?

But finally, by 1938 an outdoors man, Gerry Cunningham created the first “Zippered Rucksack” backpack. It was made with two zippered compartments & two thin straps on each side. This design that was originally meant for easy access while rock climbing led to the backpack we carry around everyday.

Function

The backpack is a design that is functional to everyone. Its main purpose is to carry anything you do not want to hold in your hands. Like, all of your favorite books to all of your dirty uniforms. You travel place to place carrying the backpack with each strap around each shoulder and the bag will fall in place on your back.

And remember kids… if you want to look cool, two strap it!

User

Moms, dads, grandparents, children, whoever it may be, can wear the backpack. The backpack can be used by anyone who needs to carry their belongings while traveling around. It is just that simple.

Materials + Production

The original backpack was made out of canvas, then it was made out of nylon. Nylon became the most popular material used for the backpack. Now the backpack is made out of all kinds of cool materials. Such as a clear, mesh, or leather fabric. Anything you can think of! They probably have a backpack made out of that!

Many people need a backpack, therefore the backpack is designed in many ways. The backpack would fit the needs of workers, students, hikers, travelers, or just your average person.

Affordance

The backpack affords lifting, carrying, zipping, & unzipping. You can tell by the zippers that you can zip up and down the backpack. Once you have undone the zippers you can tell there are compartments to put stuff in. And, of course you can notice the two straps on each side of the backpack is meant to be on each shoulder. Then you carry on with your day, while the backpack carries all of textbooks, soccer shoes, & art supplies.

& don’t worry about losing your belongings. Because the backpack has your back!
