Erie County Prisoner Rights Coalition

The Erie County Prisoner Right Coalition is an organization set in the Buffalo, Erie County that fights for the rights of prisoners in the Erie County Holding Center and Correctional Facility. What sparked this organization’s rise is a report released in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Justice about Erie Country’s two jails. In the report detailed many horrendous acts against inmates, some of which detailed a pregnant inmate being beaten, correctional facility inmate dying of a stroke shortly after having his head forced against a wall by officers, and other woeful stories of abuse. Shortly after the report it came to light that over $1,000,000 of prisoner’s commissary money was “misallocated” from the Commissary account to pay for unrelated budget items. The organization has about 15 demands one of which being to reimburse the commissary fund the full amount that was misapplied by the sheriff. Another is to cease all practices of overcrowding. The organization meets every Wednesday at 5 PM at the corner of Delaware and Church in front of the Erie County Holding center to protest these injustices. I believe this group is making some sort of difference, they certain mean to accomplish what they set themselves to do especially since they meet every Wednesday. What they stand for and their mission is clear and to become involved is easy. If you familiar with the mistreatment of inmates in this country or not showing support in this matter is significant for them because every voice counts especially for public demonstrations.
