The Start of a New Great Beginning

Hi my name is Dave Chappell and in 2020 our family is about to embark on a new adventure. The business will be called Chappell Cosmetics and this my journey into a female dominated industry.

In order to give you some context it actually started 5 years ago.

In 2014, I stepped away from a successful IT career to help my family through a number of medical crises which required around the clock care and supervision for nearly five years. The businessman became a family caregiver.

One of my daughters was diagnosed with a mental illness and another one broke her back. Later I started taking care taking care of three elder family members with significant health issues.

At times I supplemented my primary with flexible work and volunteer assignments. My wife and I received compliments from Doctors, Bankers and other members of the community commending us for the sacrifice of taking care of others.

Fast forward to 2019…

This sacrifice caused significant strain on the family and on June 3, 2019 we had to refinance our house to consolidate debts. This literally makes us one loan away from bankruptcy. I spent all of June figuring out how to free myself up so I can shift my focus from supporter back to provider. My wife moved her parents to her sister and the third elder, my best friend, was able to move from a transitional home to a more stable longterm facility.

After 5 years I put myself on the job market once again. It was slow going, no one wanted to touch me and as I started to make refinements, one thing I did was reflect on why it was so easy for me to leave my career behind while others actually put career over family. I knew in my heart if I didn’t do what I did one of my daughters would be here today and the other may have never walked again. I knew some former colleagues that would miss their own family’s funerals or children’s birthday.

I came to the realization I did not like what my field an evolved into. The days of true teamwork and collaboration have been replaced with clichés. I even switched three different industries to find better pastures, six if you count the sub-industries within finance. The field I love is now fraught with infighting, politics and no accountability because it is safer. People fear they will lose their jobs or their next bonus.

After literally dozens of applications I realized that I am no longer marketable in my chosen career and over qualified for entry level jobs. The very thing that people in the community commended me for made actually me an undesirable hire. And, I know a minimum wage job will not even scratch the surface to get my family out of this hole.

I remember that night in bed as if it was yesterday. For the first time in my life I did not have a way forward. I prayed asking for help to clear the clouds of discouragement and to make clear the path I should follow. Two days later during evening call with my wife she shared with me her idea to open up a medical aesthetics business. It was out of the blue. I wife viewed starting a business as risky and she was not a risk taker. What came out of her mouth was completely unexpected.

I told her that I will support her 120%. And, it was at that moment I felt alive again. I know business and she knows beauty. We have a match that really fits well.

While my wife is a seasoned medical professional with 30 plus years of anti-aging consumer experience, I know nothing about this female dominated industry.

Entering this industry with fresh eye is a journey I am excited to start for two reasons:

As I research the industry I see a lot of established practices with great before and afters but what is a mystery to me is how they be got to where they are today.

As such, I am intending to document this journey.

I know most people will shy away from this approach out of fear. Me included. But what I do know is that businesses don’t become overnight successes. We tend to see only the success but we all know that success just doesn’t come it takes practice and hard work. The real successes come from the experiences gained along the way.
