Digital transformation is the basis

Consistent financial market investors and analysts go beyond numbers and graphs. In the search for companies with high valuation potential, resilient, they also evaluate purpose, values, customer relationship, mobility of people, leadership style, work environment, ability to honor commitments assumed and brand strength — among other attributes that do not appear directly on the quarterly balance sheets. It is difficult to list everything that passes through the eyes of these professionals. But for those who want to find companies with good fundamentals on the stock exchange, there is at least one aspect that is becoming mandatory: digital maturity.
For over a decade, companies of all sizes and segments have been investing in the digitization of their products, services and internal processes. The pandemic acted as a catalyst for this reality. According to Ebit/Nielsen, at least 7.3 million Brazilians made their first purchases online in 2020, year 1 of social distancing. And many of them seem to have grown used to the experience. In the first year of the pandemic alone, Brazilian e-commerce recorded a 50% jump in revenue.
Today, being on digital is no longer a choice. It’s a matter of survival. What the balance sheets do not show, however, is that some companies are still reluctant to make a consistent move in that direction. There are those who keep business practices and models unchanged. There are also companies that are investing in Digital for the wrong reason: more because they are being questioned about its use and less because of the benefits that can be generated. On the other hand, there are organizations carrying out robust digital transformations and taking the lead in their segments. Some do so because they understand the urgency of revising strategies and business models. Others, younger ones, are digital natives and were born with the disruptive potential of new technologies in their DNA.
Given the current scenario, it is clearer to know which of these companies have the most potential to prosper. Today, digital transformation is a cornerstone of management. Companies that believe in this journey usually have a differentiated culture, with clear values and an inspiring purpose — essential to attract talent at a time when there is a lack of professionals in the market. They also have greater levels of automation, use technology to generate value, and incorporate more efficient organizational models. Undoubtedly, they invest in technology, but rationally, taking advantage of what they have, which is reflected in better levels of productivity, scalability, greater capacity for change and innovation.
The point is that it is not always possible to identify the level of digital maturity of a company. Even those who want to move forward have difficulty knowing where they are. In this context, it is time to have reliable indicators to assess and compare the digital maturity of companies. Several experiments have been carried out in this direction. One of them was born inside Meta. This is Meta DXi, the first diagnostic index and scale study on the level of maturity of Brazilian companies in digital transformation. Started in November 2021, the work has been providing great learning about maturity, practices, more present challenges and desired results, among other factors.
Digital transformation can redefine Brazil’s place in the global economy. With new technologies, business models, consumer behaviors and even working relationships, the competitive game is more open than ever. And the winners will be the same companies that are, today, at the forefront of digital transformation. It is worth paying attention to them.
