The Fortnite takeover in sports

The battle royale game “Fortnite” has been taking over the sports world all of a sudden. From Steelers wide receiver and video game connoisseur, JuJu Smith-Schuster, to the UMBC Retrievers basketball team, Fortnite has taken the world by storm (no pun intended).

The game is based off of a “last man standing” concept where players build bases, collect loot, and eliminate opponents in order to survive the impending storm that forces them to different areas in the map.

The initial reaction to this is it seems surprising that athletes of all ages have been consumed with this cartoon like game. The question becomes, “why is this game so popular with athletes?”

There may be no perfect answer, but there is something to be said about the teamwork component to the game. Surviving enemies and winning with your squad is something athletes everywhere can relate to and enjoy. The second element is the competitive nature of athletes. In order to be an athlete you must have a desire to compete and that competitive nature is what comes out when playing the game.

As long as players continue posting about Fortnite, it seems as though the game is here to stay in the sports world.
