The Yankees won a game they really had to win on Tuesday

The Yankees won a game that they really needed on Tuesday night when Clint Frazier slugged a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the eleventh inning to give the Yankees a 5–2 lead. Frazier’s walk-off home run was the Yankees first walk-off home run since Mike Ford against the A’s on September 1, 2019.

Frazier had a big diving catch earlier in the game that the Yankees needed.

Before Tuesday’s game that improved the Yankees to 4.5 games behind the Rays and tied their series with Tampa Bay, the Yankees had lost four games in a row and scored two runs or less in all of those games. They had also lost six of seven games before Tuesday’s win.

Miguel Andujar hit a big opposite field homer in the 4th inning for his second homer in two games to make score 3–2. Andujar should continue playing regularly since he has been decent in the field and has been hitting really well recently and that is what he is capable of when he gets regular at-bats. Coming into Tuesday’s game, Andujar was 11–32 with a homer and two RBI and not he has added some more power.

Gary Sanchez had a big pickoff of Austin Meadows on first for the second out of the sixth inning on a rocket throw to first. Jonathan Loaisiga, who has been outstanding this season, then got a big strikeout of Joey Wendle to strand two runners on base. That was big after two walks in the sixth. That kept the score tied at three.

Sanchez had another bad base running mistake on a ball hit in front of him for the first out of the 7th but it was a tricky play in some ways. He was also thrown out on the bases in Detroit. That was their 27th out on the bases this season, which is most in the majors. That is a full game’s worth of extra outs given to the other team.

Frazier made an outstanding diving catch that was hit into no mans land to end the 8th inning. He just barely got his glove under the ball. Urshela got a big single through the hole between first and second base in the shift to snap his 0–17 hitless streak. This put runners on first and second with two hits and Stanton pinch hit for Ford. Stanton then unfortunately grounded out to keep the score tied at three going into the 9th.

Sanchez led off bottom of the 9th against Fairbanks and lined out to center.

Brett Gardner had his first steal of the season in the ninth inning. LeMahieu hit a hard line drive that was caught by second baseman Lowe to send the game to extra. DJ had been excellent with runners in scoring positions last two seasons but not as much this season.

Lucas Luetge was outstanding once again in the top of the 10th after his scoreless month of May.

Odor had a productive out to sacrifice DJ over to third to start the 10th. The Andrew Kittredge then intentionally walked Judge to set up first and third with one out for Urshela but he struck out after a six pitch at-bat on a slider. Gleyber Torres pinch hit for Wade and tried for his 3rd walk-off of the season but walked on a 3–2 count. Sanchez then struck out swinging on a ball out of the zone with the bases loaded. He had the chance to be the hero. Bullpen was outstanding and had six scoreless innings. Frazier big home run that he pulled to the bleachers in left field. He came through when the Yankees needed him to. Kittredge gave him a slider that he really barreled. Frazier’s two walk off homers in one season are the most by an Yankees since 2017.

Manager Aaron Boone on Luetge — As good as his numbers are, he has been better than that. He has been everything we hoped we were seeing in spring training he has carried into the season.

Yankees relief pitchers have been great in last seven games. Yankees had their 5th walk-off win of the seassos.

Yankees have 4th worst percentage in baseball scoring a runner from third, which needs to be improved.
