The Titanic Sank to the Bottom of the Ocean

One hundred and six years ago, on April 14 and April 15, the Titanic sank to the bottom of the ocean. Fifteen hundred and three people perished. It was a terrible tragedy.

When I was back in Ireland recently, my cousin’s girlfriend told me a story. She said her great-grandfather had bought a ticket for the Titanic and was standing on the dock waiting to board. A man approached him and offered him double the voyage price if he would sell him his ticket. Her great-grandfather said no. Then the stranger offered him triple. He couldn’t turn down that amount of money so he reluctantly sold the man his ticket.

Her great-grandfather is listed as a lost soul in the Titanic records because he was on the passenger list and was not a survivor pulled from the ship. But there is no way to know whether the man who took his place lived or died.

Everything happens for a reason. My cousin’s girlfriend is here because her great-grandfather didn’t step onto the Titanic that day.

My own grandfather had his passport ready and was planning to leave Ireland and travel to America to start his life there. But his younger brother, who was to stay and take care of the farm and the old folks, died of a burst appendix. So my grandfather had no choice but to stay. He wasn’t a farmer at heart, but his destiny was chosen for him. After that he met my grandmother and they married later in life. And that is why I am here today.

You never know what’s going to happen. As Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman once said, “Was I always going to be here? No I was not. I was going to be homeless at one time, a taxi driver, truck driver, or any kind of job that would get me a crust of bread. You never know what’s going to happen.”

So work hard, take action and dream big. As my grandmother always said, what’s for you will not pass you. You will always end up on the journey meant for you and you alone.
