The Hardest Part Of Running Your Own Business

It’s not sales, marketing, HR, or finance.

When I started Monarch Wave, it didn’t scare me that I had never started a business before. It didn’t worry me that my prior agency experience was limited. I wasn’t even nervous that I hadn’t finished my marketing degree.

There was only one thing that really scared me at first, and still does occasionally to this day.

Options. I was paralyzed by thoughts of what else I could’ve done.

I could have made an app, or a plugin, or done something else entirely. I could have focused on something like VR, or AI and done much better by now.

I was constantly asking myself if I picked the right thing.

Now, the career option doesn’t scare me nearly as much. I’m confident I made the right choice in starting my agency, I love every minute of it.

There’s still a fear around daily decisions though. Did I make the right call by focusing on conferences this year instead of something else? Should I have done X, instead of Y?

These kinds of fears can cripple a business if you let them — especially if you back track, or try and take advantage of too many new opportunities.

Instead, tackle each decision with decisiveness and quit looking back. Your business will do better because of it.
